MARKETING FOR A MISSION

American Marketing Association Colorado has teamed up with The Lion Project and Cause for Awareness to organize a marketing competition that brings together top Denver-area marketing talent to help solve real-world marketing challenges faced by local nonprofits.

Be ready for an afternoon of heated competition, shark-tank style pitches, solutions, and fun.

Marketing teams can enter to participate in one of three challenge categories: social media marketing, content marketing, or PR. We will then work with selected nonprofits to refine the brief and get it ready for the competition.

On the day of the event, marketing teams will learn what nonprofit they’ve been assigned and receive their briefs. Multiple teams will be assigned the same brief. Each team will then have three hours to develop a working solution to their nonprofit’s marketing problem.

Set in the scenic foothills of Colorado, Spero is a peer-run, peer-led residential recovery program for men and women who want to live and thrive in recovery.

Marketing Challenge: Content Marketing

Mattersville is a housing and job training non-profit that provides housing, sustainable living, job training, job placement and mental health for U.S. military veterans.

Marketing Challenge: Social Media Marketing

The non-profit provides around-the-clock treatment and care for young adults between the ages of 14 and 21, including housing, educational support and specialized treatment programs.

  • Bragging rights! Winners of Marketing for a Mission will be able to say they beat out some of the best teams in town for top honors, something that would go nicely in their next business pitch.
  • Present in front of top talent. We have assembled some of Denver’s and brightest to review these pitches. Participating is an opportunity to shine in front of decision-makers in Denver’s business and non-profit community.
  • Teams will gain exposure among Denver’s business and nonprofit community through the event’s marketing programming – including branding in all marketing materials and specific team spotlights included in AMA communications.
  • Opportunity for teams to highlight their community engagement, volunteerism, and commitment to giving back in their own backyard.
  • Make connections with like-minded marketing and communications professionals in the Denver area.

Event Overview

  • 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm: Opening Ceremonies, complete with brief assignments and an intro to our esteemed panel of judges
  • 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm: Team time! Teams have three hours to develop their solution.
  • 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm: The open, ticketed portion of the event begins. Spectators arrive on-site ahead of the live “pitch presentations.”
  • 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Pitch time. Each team will present their proposal in front of our panel of judges and a live audience.
  • 7:00 pm – 7:15 pm: Awards Celebration. Judges will announce winners for each category.
  • 7:15 pm – 8:00 pm: Attendees and participants can network and mingle over drinks and light snacks.

Marketing Teams


  • $100 entry fee per team. (AMA will send invoice once teams are selected)
  • Maximum of 3 – 5 people per team. *Companies may enter more than one team.
  • At least two members of the team must be present during the entire competition event, 3 pm – 8 pm.
  • As these will be REAL, implementable marketing plans, we ask that a representative(s) from each winning team commit to two to three hours of Q&A follow-up phone calls with their respective nonprofit.
